- Purpose
- SURE is dedicated to cultivating a proactive and inclusive culture of safety across research and teaching laboratories. Led primarily by graduate students with support from faculty, staff, and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), SURE engages the broader research community—including undergraduates, postdocs, staff and faculty—to: 1. Promote awareness, education, and dialogue around safe laboratory practices. 2. Host preparedness events and identify gaps in safety knowledge and resources. 3. Strengthen connections between academic labs, EH&S, and industry to align safety expectations. 4. Encourage sustainable research through waste reduction and responsible lab practices. Through leadership, collaboration, and advocacy, we aim to make every lab at UC San Diego a safer, more informed, and environmentally conscious place to research and discover.
